Today was our last full day in Ireland and it was a good one. Its started with breakfast with the Troy family. We finally met the little Maeve and Eleanor. We left the house around 10 am for a nice drive along the coast to Spidle. We got back to Galway just as the town was starting to get alive. Stores open late on Sunday here. We parked the car in the city centre and walk around. Galway is the 3rd biggest town in Ireland and it is really beautiful. Too bad we are not staying long enough to spend an evening in town. Apparently the Irish pubs here are very good.
After lunch I proposed that we play a game of pitch and put. This is basically smaller than a par 3 course but bigger than mini golf. You are given a 9 iron or a pitching wedge and a putter. I really wanted to beat Mike at this. On our way t the course we could see that the sky getting darker... but I knew a this point that NOTHING would stop me playing and I also wanted to experience real rain in Ireland.
We finally found the pitch and put. It was in a guy's backyard. The owner, Pierce Connelly, was so nice. We chatted for a good 40 minutes. Mike and I were the only one there. Pierce is a cancer surviour that doesn't look his have (70 years old). He used to have a 18 hole course in is yard but when he got cancer he told his wife that he will make her a rich widow. He sold half the land and hold half of his promise (he din't die). While we were talking under a big tree it started to
rain... but not normal rain... t started LASING rain! Pierce thought that we would change our mind and not golf but I was determined!!! I can't remember last time I was this wet. We played the whole 9 hole course. Most hole are less than 40 yeards long. After 40 minutes in the rain we finally finished... and of course I beat Mike :)
We had a change of clothes is the car. We change quickly got totally dry and looking some what clean and we started driving toward Bunratty. You see tomorrow is my birthday (turning 31) and for my present Mike got ticket to the Bunratty banquet! This was such a fun evening. You get to have dinner in a real castle! The castle was built in 1425! The staff were dressed in period outfit. The whole dinner was like if you were in the 15th century. The was a king and a queen, nice live music and we ate with our hands! Ribs, chicken, bread, soup, wine, dessert and MEAD. Mead is this honey based wine... delicious!A bit too delicious ;)
After dinner we had to make the drive back to Marie in Nenagh for our last night in Ireland. What a week!
