Day 15 - Paris [July 13, 2009]

First full day in Paris... unfortunately it is Mike's last day in Paris. Tomorrow morning he is already leaving for Dublin and then California the day after. It went by so fast. This morning we woke up late again. I think I figured it out: we are still in England time. We never adjusted when we went to Amsterdam. It is still light at 10:30pm at night so we go to bed so late which makes it hard to wake up in the morning. I guess that's ok since we are after all in vacations.

We took the metro to Butte de Montmartre. There on top of the hill there is the Basilique Sacre-Coeur. It is very nice. The neighbouhood around it is also great. First you get to see Paris from up high then the streets are small and full of artists... some of them very good. This is where the movie Amelie was filmed. We made our way to the Montmartre cemetery. This is a very unusual cemetery for me (but will found out that it is more commun in Europe later). All the tombs are on the ground (as opposed to in the ground). Plus most of them have a 'house'. Some famous people are buried (I guess I shouldn't say buried since they are not... maybe I should say 'rest' instead) here. We walked around but after a while decided that it was time to go see Moulin Rouge. We just walked by and took some pictures... we were more interested by the museum next door.

For 8 euros each Mike and I went to Le Musee de l'Erotisme. This is basically 7 floors of erotic art. It was actually very good... and sometime quite funny. The art come form all around the globe and from different moment in time. I think it was quite worth the 8 euros :)

Mike and I tried to have a cheap lunch at Subway... 16 euros later!!! The same meal usually cost us 10 dollars in San Jose. Plus I had to pay 0.20 euros for the bathroom.... but we got free wifi (promonced wee-fee in France... makes me lagh everytime).

From this neighbouhood we rushed to Le Louvre. We got there a bit late and had to do a power-visit again... 45 minutes to see Le Louvre!!! We did it. We first found La Jocombe (Mona Lisa) and then Venus de Milo.... for the next 40 minutes we just waled around admiring the beauty of the painting and scuptures... I was surprised of the heat and the lighting in the place. Beside the mona lisa nothing was really protected... I was imagining le Louvre to take more precaution with all the treasures it has.... We were even allowed to take pictures (which you'll see once I upload them... in the next year :)

Outside the museum we took more pictures with the pyramid... I found out how to take pictures of only one perticular color with my camera. I knew it could do it but never knew how. Mike got a surprised text from Mike's cousin. She didn't have to work afterall so we could have dinner with her and her husband Olaf afterall.

We met them at the St-Paul station. We went for a drink (water for Mike) and then had a wonderful dinner. It was great to meet Eve and Olaf. They seem to be in Paris to stay. Eve work in front (and behind) the camera on France 24. Olaf is from Holland and he works on a dating website. I really enjoyed spending time with them. Again, I hope we will see them in California soon ;)

After dinner Eve and Olaf walked us to Notre-Dame the Paris.Wow. We couldn't go in but the outside was all illuminated. It was stunning. Again not great to take pictures but very nice to look at with your bare eyes. I will come back here during day time tomorrow to take pictures and hopefully go in.

That was a perfect way to end the evening!
