Day 13 - Amsterdam [July 11, 2009]

I don't have as much to write about Amsterdam but it is not because it is not a nice city. I really love this place... Today we rented some bike and cycle around town. The only plan were to go to the Anne Frank House at 7:30pm and have dinner with Roger (Mike's cousin once removed)) after. We managed to also go to the Van Gogh museum in the early afternoon. The museum was ok. I mean I don't really know what makes him a better artist than the one on the streets.... seriously I'm sure there is a reason beside the fact that he is dead. I guess I don't have the artistic eye. I still enjoyed the museum and it was nice to read about him and his life but couldn't understand why he is so famous... Basically his family started the museum after his death with all the painting that he never sold... I'm sure I'm missing some details :)

It was a really nice day of biking around. Like I mentioned before Amsterdam is small but there are so many streets and canals and nice things to see. The afternoon flew by. I think I'll remember this day for a long time...

After a nice day biking I needed to get back to earth's reality. Anne Frank museum is really something. It is so sad! I don't know why but I've been reading lots of books lately about the Holocust: Mous I & II, The boy in the stipped pyjamas, currently I'm reading Sarah's Key just to name a few. This is such a troubling subject that I really can't understand. Visiting the house of a little 12 year old during the war. Hiding to stay alive. I haven't read her book yet but from what I can see in the house she was not a 12 year old anymore. This war really made little jewish kids grow up fast. I don't think I'll ever understand why this happened... I just can't see how humans can treat people like that... and it wasn't that long ago....I'm glad I got to see the house. I'll buy the book first thing when I get back home.

Dinner with Roger and Tom was great. Mike had never met his mom's cousin before. Through Marie (Mike's aunt) we got to have a wonderful dinner with him. During dinner Roger asked Mike if we would see Eve (Mike first cousin) while in Paris. Mike didn't think of that and Maris forgot to mentioned to Mike that Eve was in Paris... Quikly Mike was able to get Eve's email address. We will try to reach her tomorrow and hopefully we'll get to see her on our only available evening in Paris. Last time Mike saw Eve she was 5... she is now 30... This is not like my family where my cousins are like my brothers and sisters....

We bikes back to the hotel...a few drops of rain but nothing major. Tomorrow is our last day here already... one more night in my favorite hotel... woohoo!!!
